KUCHING: An exciting musical programme is in store at the SMK St Joseph band`s third annual fundraising concert next month.
Themed “131 Years of St Joseph`s School: A Celebration in Concert” in line with the school`s 131st anniversary, it will feature each section of the band as well as staff members appearing as soloists.
Also making a special guest appearance are three percussionists from China, Singapore and Vietnam who call themselves the BAM! Percussion Trio.
“This is an international ensemble with a flair for the dramatic. For them, anything can be a percussion instrument and the audience is sure to be amazed at what they can do,” the band`s teacher-in-charge June Ling said at the launch of ticket sales yesterday.
She added that there would be solo performances from band staff like Anthony Wong on the alto saxophone, Jonathan Fox on the timpani and Yap Thien Soo on the trumpet.
“Join us for this festive evening of achievement, tradition and the arts. When you see and hear how all the pieces of the puzzle fit together, you`ll have a greater understanding of just what 131 years of working in harmony can produce,” she said.
Old Josephians Association president Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian said the concert was not just about raising funds but a way for the band to give back to the community, particularly after its successful outing in the German Open Championships in May when it won the show band category.
The band also performed a concert at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory in Singapore last year which was well received by the audience.
“This is a very important event for you to give back to the community. Not everyone could go to Germany or Singapore to watch you perform, so this is your opportunity to let the community enjoy your performance,” Dr Sim told the band members.
He also reminded them to continue working hard and pursue their dreams.
“You`ve shown that you can go to Germany and win, so you should dare to dream. My part is to organise a platform for you to show your talents and share your performance with the community.
“And one day when you become famous, don`t forget to give back to the school and help to groom the next group of musicians after you.”
The concert will be held at Trinity Methodist Church at Ellis Road here on Dec 15. Tickets are priced at RM50, RM100, RM200 and RM500.
